About this object

Equestrian portrait of Emperor Nicholas II in the uniform of the Finnish Dragoon Regiment and seated on a bay-colored horse. He faces to the left, holding the reins in his left hand and with his right hand obscured, but at his side. His uniform includes a jacket with epaulettes, brimless hat, and riding boots. The horse stands on a grassy knoll, with trees in the right background. In the distance to the left, is a town. The horizon line is low and much of the background is taken up with blue sky and profuse white clouds. This image is a preparatory sketch for a larger portrait now in the museum in Helsinki.
