About this object

Marjorie Merriweather Post wore this peach-colored taffeta gown with a brocaded rose bouquet pattern for the marriage of her daughter, Nedenia Marjorie Hutton (American, b. 1923), to Stanley Rumbough, Jr. in 1946. The neckline is V-shaped in front and back. The bodice is closely fitted by intricately cut and shaped seams. The shoulder is extended and pleated into the armseye, creating a winged epaulette. Tubular sleeves are shirred on the outside to elbow length. The bell shaped skirt falls straight and flat in front, with the fullness pulled to the back where a decorative, simulated bustle is added. Two flat ties, beginning at the side back seam, extend the length of the dress. A flat, narrow belt, worn just above the natural waist, is placed in the front seam and closes at back. A 5" wide grosgrain interior belt is worn at the natural waist and closes with metal hooks and eyes. The garment closes with a metal zipper at center back.
