About this object

This tubular party dress with dropped waistline was worn by Eleanor for her debut at the Ritz Carlton, New York. The silk charmeuse foundation has a low cut, square neckline, with metal thread embroidered on tulle. It is finished in a scalloped shape with a band of tulle and a band of charmeuse, ending with a band of open weave lace with gold thread. Note that this is different from the embroidery at neckline. A band of charmeuse ribbon with metal weights is sewn on the back at the scallop shaped edge. The overdress is entirely in tulle. The bodice lays flat against the charmeuse. The full skirt is composed of alternating bands of pale pink (or flesh colored) and white gathered tulle. All the edges of the tulle are finished with a metal thread. A decorative sash of silk ribbon is placed at the dropped waistline with a large bow at center front. Sewn on the end of one streamer is a floral ornament consisting of fabric covered petals, flowers, pearls, glass beads, and rhinestones. This floral ornament is duplicated in a larger version at the left shoulder.
