About this object

This narrow, tubular dress with dropped waistline is typical of the new silhouette of the 1920s. The dress would have been worn at different times of day for activities such as a luncheon or tea, dinner or dancing, or an evening at the theater.

Tubular evening dress with double layer of black tulle constructed on a foundation of black silk crêpe. The narrow black tulle shoulder straps are backed in flesh toned cotton tulle. The drop waisted skirt is trimmed in champagne colored scalloped lace applied to the tulle in three tiers. A flower shaped decoration with two verical ties is applied at left hip. A small cape edged in lace is attached to th shoulder straps in back. Note that the tulle is secured to the foundation garment slightly below the natural waist. This may indicate that the dress had another layer originally and was altered to the later drop waisted fashion.
