About this object

This traditional, T-shaped Chinese jacket belonging to Mrs. Post's mother, Ella Letitia Merriweather Post, has an asymmetrical, diagonal front closure. It is made in a bright green silk with a woven pattern of plants, butterflies and Chinese medallions. The body and sleeves are cut in one. The neck is embellished with embroidered ivory silk, depicting figures in a landscape, that has been cut in an intricate pattern and applied flat. The shaped edge is finished with yellow piping. The area is further accented with green and purple gros grain ribbon following the decorative piped edge. Bands of the embroidered silk fabric and gros grain ribbon are also applied along the assymetrical side closure and at the hem. Both edges are then finished with a 1" band of blue fabric cut on the bias. The same fabric is used to create four fabric loops to secure the garment at the proper right side neck. The sleeves are edged with a wide band of cream silk embroidered in green, purple, blue and black silk thread in a vertical Asian landscape scene with figures. The entire jacket is lined with cotton muslin.
