About this object

This bodice was designed and custom made for Mrs. Post as part of a costume representing late 17th or early 18th century French or English court dress. The cream colored velvet bodice is built on a cotton muslin foundation with applied boning and has a square scoop neckline and short, puffed sleeves. The velvet is embellished with an over-all floral design in clear and gray seed pearls with rhinestone accents at flower centers. A peach colored satin basque is overlayed with peach colored tulle and finished with a vertical row of five satin bows increasing in size from bottom to top. The neckline and sleeves are trimmed with rows of white tulle edged with dark metal thread for stiffening. A 1-1/2" band of brown fur, possibly sable, is applied at the neck and on the sleeve at the bicept. The sleeves are further embellished with a band of gathered lace applied flat above the fur band and two rows of freehanging gathered lace just below the fur. The puff sleeves and freehanging lace ruffles are supported by a tulle sleeve lining. A single peach bow is applied to each sleeve, just below the fur band. The bodice closes at center back with hook and eye tape.
