About this object

This full length, sleeveless evening gown is very similar to another, shorter dress in the collection (48.119.1-4). The black lace bodice is trimmed at the scoop neck with two intersecting bands of black velvet, creating a "cut-out" effect. A wing sleeve is created from two semicircles of pleated organza with a black lace overlay placed at front and back of each shoulder. Spiral boning and suspended weights at the side front ensure that the garment does not shift. Pink organza insets in a "zig-zag" motif decorate the bodice at front and back. A pleated skirt of pink organza with diamond and zig-zag shaped appliques of black lace is attached at the natural waist. The garment closes with a metal zipper at center back. The dress was probably worn with a narrow black velvet belt to complement the trim at the neckline and conceal the visible waist seam. The dress is worn over a full, strapless pink taffeta petticoat. The petticoat has a boned bodice and full skirt, and closes at center back with a metal zipper. A separate, pink net half petticoat with a gros-grain waist belt was also worn for added fullness.
