About this object

The front is minutely embroidered with the four evangelists each seated writing his gospel in the corners of the cover. In the center is a quadrilobe with the scene of the crucifixion before the walls of Jerusalem, two Maries at the left, St. John the Beloved, and the Centurion on the right, and God the Father in the clouds above. All the figures have abbreviations of their names embroidered in beads, the faces and hands are embroidered in silk. The spine has five panels with the following subjects: 1- the tablets of the Old Testament and the book of the New Testament, 2- the chalice, 3- the various instruments of the passion, 4- the seven branched candlestick 5- the tomb with other instruments of the passion. The back is embroidered with a rinceau in yellow and black on a ivory ground. In the center is a wreath of flowers around this inscription.
