About this object

This large white/ecru tablecoth has a border of filet edging and a linen band all around. There is eyelet and white embroidery surrounding round insets. The insets are part filet and part Venise needle lace. At the corner of the cloth is a Venise portrait head of a woman with a high 18th c. headress. The center of the cloth is a long oval with two rows of filet lace. A Venise needle lace inset alternates with smaller insets in the inner row. The outer row is larger with fruits with raised outlines. There is a large inset of a woman in 18th c. full gown and insets of two birds in the corners of the outer row. All of the Venise medallions throughout the cloth are grounded with a square grid of buttonholed bars with picots at the intersections. The outlines are tightly buttonholed.
