VESTMENT (STIKHAR')

Creator(s): Poliakov Manufactory ((Possibly))

On view in: Russian Sacred Arts Gallery

About this object

The fabrics used comprise linen, silk, silver-wrapped threads, gold-wrapped threads, and silk chenille. The dominant color of the garment is gold and it is accompanied by flowers made with red and pink chenille and leaves made of green chenille. The central ornamental element is bouquets of pussy willows over leaves, grapes on grapevines, chrysanthemums, carnations, and many other flowers. Leaves and pussy willows run throughout the entire vestment. The yoke is set off by a wavy pattern of wheat and grapes in a band in gold and silver that also appears on the cuffs and around the hem of the vestment. On the rear is appliquéd a gold Latin, or equal-armed, cross that is slightly couched and is ornamented with gold or gilt hand-made spangles. Remaining loops on the garment indicate that there were once 16 buttons closing the garment. 8 buttons in silver gilt filigree remain on proper left and none on proper left. Of the remaining buttons, 4 are flattened. Some of the embroidery techniques used are: raised and laid stitches, satin stitches, basket weave, couching, and lattice work.
