About this object

The dominant color of the stikhar' is gold. The design on the vestment was created by embroidering silk in various patterns to create a brocade. The design is an all-over one of flowers emphasizing what appear to be pomegranates. Forms are rendered in different colored gold threads outlined in an orange-brown silk thread. Some of the techniques used to create the brocade pattern are couched stitches, latticework, and basket-weave. The yoke of the neck has a floral or vegetal ornament sewn in gold. This decoration also appears along the cuffs and around the hem of the vestment. There is a small yellow silk loop sewn on rear at neck. On the back of the garment is applied a Latin, or equal-armed, cross with sequins and discs. It is made of red silk with couched silver-gilt threads. The rays are accented with hand-made sequins and half dome-shaped disks. Outlining of images is done in stem stitches in orange-brown silk. There are 7 loops on each side of the garment, indicating that there were originally 14 buttons holding the garment closed. Ten buttons remain and all are silver-gilt filigree shaped into balls.
