About this object

Body is silver brocade with leaf and flower forms, rectangular panels front and back, gold border with rinceau containing a bouquet of naturalistic flowers in machine embroidery, wide band of similar flowers at hem, gold embroidered cross on the back. The garment was clearly manufactured all as one piece, i.e., the orphrey/bands were woven as part of the fabric rather than applied separately. The design shows several modern touches such as the creeping of the floral design over the bands and the Neo-Byzantine form of the cross on the back -- that suggest it might be manufactured by (or influenced by) the Olovianishnikov Manufactory.
