About this object

The epitrakhil' is constructed in one piece, rather than having been cut down the center and being closed with buttons or hooks, as was more typical in the 19th century. The fabric is brocaded with a pattern of brightly colored roses rendered in red and blue, branches in alternating dark purple chenille and light purple silk, and leaves in yellow and green. They are set against a background of roses rendered in silver-wrapped white silk thread on a gilt metal ground. The border is decorated with a wide band of lace made from gold-wrapped yellow silk thread and edged with green velvet piping. A small row of the same lace is sewn across the garment near the bottom. On the front center are applied three equal-armed crosses in gold- and silver-wrapped threads and ornamented with gilt sequins. The bottom is ornamented with a row of gilt fringe. The lining is made of yellow linen.
