About this object

The decorative fabric is brocaded with metal and polychrome silk and silk chenille to form a pattern of pussy willows intermixed with bright red and pink flowers, grapes on grapevines, chrysanthemums, carnations, and other flowers. The front of the epitrakhil is divided in two and can be closed with hooks. On each side of the epitrakhil' are appliquéd three gold Latin, or equal-armed, crosses that is slightly couched and is ornamented with gold or gilt hand-made spangles. The edges are trimmed with a gold- and silver metal lace and there is a row of gilt fringe. A second row of gilt fringe at the very bottom of the garment has been removed and the linen lining is exposed.
