About this object

The decoration of the cross-shaped pokrovets is so modernized that it is barely recognizable as a liturgical object. The background is of a cream-colored satin. Embroidered on each of the four arms is a chalice in blue from which vigorous red floral forms spring. (A pokrovets more typically would have a decoration of seraphim on each arm.) Four larger red leaves in various shades of red stand behind the chalice and the entire object is framed in swirling leaf and bud forms, the lowest of which is dotted with tiny blue buds. In the center is an equal-armed cross surrounded by a rich, evenly patterned decoration of buds in light blue and red. The cross itself appears to be woven from a fine silver thread and the entire form of the cross is outlined in a bright gold braid. The braid also forms the center of four abstracted floral forms surrounding the cross. The outer edge of the entire piece is edged in gold braid, a mustard-colored satin dotted with red embroidered balls, and a second line of gold braid. Sewn to the edge is a heavy gold fringe.
