About this object

In each corner of the deep green velvet cloth is a six-winged seraphim, the face painted on cardboard and the wings rendered in couched silver thread. They are connected by a gold-embroidered cruciform design made of latticed ribbons edged with gilt spangles gathered into four small bows with trailing roses beneath and four more bows above each of the seraphim's heads. In the center an equilateral latin cross contains a small light blue enamel medallion, on which is painted the Mother of God holding the Christ Child and standing before a cross with roundels of God, the Mother of God and John the Baptist on three of the ends. The central cross is worked in silver thread couched in a zig-zag pattern set with pink tin rosettes and blue sequins, and edged with a row of gold sequins and a border of smooth gold embroidery. The embroidery throughout contrasts smooth and crimped metal threads. The back is lined with pink linen.
