About this object

In the center of the needlework is a round medallion containing a sloop facing to the left. To the right and left are small islands are there are smaller boats in the foreground. The sky has a few clouds. Surrounding the medallion is a shield and 10 flags. The shield contains the British coat-of-arms surmounted by a rose and a thistle. The flags include an American flag with twenty-eight stars, an Italian flag, and the white and blue navy ensigns of the Royal Navy. Below the medallion is a banderolle with the inscription "18 H.M.S. Niobe 1873." Below the medallion and flags is a rose with a spray of thistles extending to the right and a spray of laurel extending to the left. The background is primarily gray. Around the sides and at the top is embroidered a simulated gold drapery with tassels and fringe. This is in an antique wooden frame.
