About this object

The ivory body of the tankard is carved in relief with a series of pseudo-classical figures in groups. 1) a young man from the left is offering a horn of plenty full of fruit to a seated woman with a child behind her and another young man reaching toward her. 2) a seated woman holding aloft a tazza with her left hand and offering a bowl to drink to a child who is led by another woman. 3) an old man seated on a rock holding a shell of Venus in his right hand and with his left arm about a woman while a child plays between them. 4) a woman pours water or wine from an ewer in to a shell held by two children. The ivory cover is carved in very high relief with two women reclining on the ground, one overturning a jug of water while several putti play about them. The knop is a standing figure of a putto blowing a long curved horn. The silver base has a baroque scroll design in repousse and stippled with four scroll feet. The silver band about the upper portion of the ivory is engraved. The handle is composed of several double c-scrolls and a mermaid. The thumbpiece is an angel with outstretched wings.
