About this object

The body of the box is made from a single piece of tortoise shell that has been shaped so that it is ribbed like a flat melon. Along each rib and around the upper edge are rows of small silver circles set in the tortoiseshell. The cover is another piece of tortoiseshell, similarly shaped but flatter and inset with same series of small silver circles. The hinge and edge about the two sections is made in silver and plain except for a projecting thumb piece. Piqué work.
