About this object

The surface of the rectangular box is veneered with tortoise shell. There are strips of ivory around the edges which are held in place by other strips of ivory going in the opposite direction and held in place by nails with silver heads. On the cover is an elaborate openwork panel in ivory with a medallion in the center containing a Hindu monogram. On each of the four sides is a rectangular ivory panel in openwork with a design in the center. The four feet are missing. It is lined inside with purple velvet. There is a keyhole in the center front.
