About this object

The oval box is composed of three pieces of horn, one for the top, one for the cover and one piece which is bent around to form the body of the box. The cover and bottom are decorated with elaborate baroque curved and wave-like motifs. Some of the motifs on the bottom are continued on the sides of the box. On the front is a hound dog seated under a tree. At the back, a stag is seated under a tree and at the left end a hare is running in a forest. On a projecting piece on the right side is pictured a goats head. The hinge is in silver decorated with channeling and with a stylized leaf motif for the thumb piece.
