PANELING

Creator(s): Unknown

On view in: Dining Room

About this object

The paneling is made in oak. The carving that frames the three mirrors in the Dining Room is gilt. Above the mirror over the mantel is an oval tapestry in an elaborate carved gilt frame, while the panels over the two mirrors opposite each contain a pair of birds, swags of flowers and leaves, and a shell at top. The rectangular panels on each side of the fireplace look very old and are carved with rococo scrolls, bird heads, hoofed legs and a shell. The rectangular panels around each of four tondi are carved with leaf scrolls and shells. The four tondi are made in carved wood that has been painted to simulate terracotta. Each contains a pair of putti engaged in activities which represent allegories of painting, science, literature and sculpture. The panels are separated by carved pilasters topped with fanciful adaptation of a Corinthian capital.
