About this object

This commode follows the influence of Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814), the most famous cabinetmaker of the neoclassical period in Italy. The commode is rectangular in shape. The top of the commode is plain except for a border in different colored woods. The front and ends are made from elaborate marquetry. The front has one long shallow drawer at the top with a vine scroll in marquetry against wood-stained green. Below are two large drawers with the marquetry design running across them. In the center is a large rosette in light wood against a greenish ground. To the left and right are rectangular panels with leaf and floral scrolls in light wood against a light design. The ends have across the top the same scroll as on the front. Below this are rectangular panels with acanthus scrolls in light woods on a greenish ground. The back is covered with red velvet. It stands on four legs. They are shaped like tapered pyramids with the small point at the bottom.
