About this object

The armchairs are made in the Adam style. The back is oval and made from caning. It has a painted wood border which has a black background decorated with a painted garland of green ribbon and roses. In the center is an oval wood medallion painted with the figure of a woman in 18th century dress. She is seen three quarters length and is turned to the right. She has her arms crossed in front of her. Her hair is dressed high with a hat and she wears a dress with a lace collar. The chair has slender open curved arms with a painted spray of leaves on the front. The front of the seat is serpentine and is also painted with a spray of flowers. The seat is caned with a wooden panel underneath for support. Attached to it is a separate flat upholstered cushion made from striped gray velvet and ecru flowered brocade and is edged with fringe. The front legs are square and are straight but tapered. They end with spade feet. The back legs are plain and slightly splayed.
