COMMODE, ONE OF TWO
Creator(s): Unknown
On view in: Dining Room
About this object
The commodes have marquetry on the top, front and two sides all of the scenes in marquetry being different except those on the ends. Each has a molded edge about the top and bottom with formal decorative motifs. Each has four drawers, the brass handles and keyhole fittings of which appear to be recent. Both have plain feet at the back while the commodes at the front rest on a crouched lion for feet. Each commode has a different design. This commode has a picture on top of a man and a woman in elaborate court dress. The man is approaching from the left, the woman from the right. She extends a rose to the man. On the front is another couple in elaborate 18th century dress with the woman seated on the ground on the left. She has a basket of fruit beside her. There is a man at the right approaching the woman and extending his hand out to her. The ends have similar pictures to the other commode. On the right end is a man seated at a table with his meal. On the left is a seated man blowing a trumpet with his dog at his feet.
