About this object

Marjorie Merriweather Post purchased this mahogany, Louis XVI-style grand piano from Steinway & Sons in Manhattan on December 3, 1919. Immediately after its purchase, the piano was delivered to Baumgarten & Co. of New York, which may have executed the hand-painted medallions and carved decorations on the piano case.

Louis XVI style. Painted with oval medallions in colors of winged putti and freize panels with swags of flowers in colors and vine scrolls enclosing musical instrumentation. Three elaborately carved standards.
