About this object

Marjorie Merriweather Post (Hutton) purchased this mahogany, Louis XVI-style grand piano from Steinway & Sons in Manhattan on February 13, 1924. It features a checkerboard marquetry pattern on the piano case with carved decoration, gilt details, and oval painted medallions in grisaille with classical female figures on a blue ground.

Louis XVI style. Top and sides in checkerboard pattern. There is carved decoration, some details in gilt, and oval painted medallions in grisaille with classical female figures on a blue ground. Three elaborate double shaft legs in carved gilt wood. Style C. Manufactured December 27, 1923.
