About this object

Silvered wooden base has four scroll like legs ending at the tops in the head of a fantastic beast. Four baroque style stretchers each with a rosette and with swags of leaves on the front and back tie legs together. Marble top central portion is black and border is mottled marble. In center is a still life picture of a group of classical vases and vessels and as a frame there is a strip of red marble around which is entwined a ribbon in white marble. The marble top bears the signature of the Maltese manufacturer J. Darmanin & Sons (active early 1800s-1942).
