SMALL WRITING TABLE (TABLE À ECRIRE)

Creator(s): François-Gaspard Teuné (Cabinet Maker)

On view in: French Drawing Room

About this object

The table is rectangular and rests on four tapering legs. The top is inlaid in marquetry with the view of a street of a town seen in perspective. This is edged by a brass railing on three sides to allow a drawer to be pulled out which has fittings for writing. On its face is a wavy ribbon in marquetry which also decorates the upper sides and back. Below these, on all sides are deep panels of marquetry with a pattern of linked ovals, each containing a stylized rosette. On each corner is a hanging spray of bell flowers and above a gilt bronze rosette. The front panel is a tambour that slides to reveal three drawers inside. The legs are rectangular and taper down to plain angular sabots. Brass strips edge the top, the shallow drawer area and the bottom of the body.
