ROUND TAMBOUR TABLE (GUÉRIDON)

Creator(s): Pierre Migeon III (Cabinet Maker)

On view in: French Drawing Room

About this object

The table is tambour shaped supported on tripod feet with a shelf in between them. The top is circular with a gilt brass gallery and with slight projections above the three feet. It has a marquetry picture of a castle in the country with trees and a flag. In the foreground is a river with swans and a bridge. Around the sides are three more scenes in marquetry. The front panel is slatted and when a nearby rosette is pressed releasing a lock, it slides back and reveals three drawers. This panel has a rolling country scene with a castle at the left and another with a flag on the right hand side. The panel to the right of the sliding panel has a country scene with a large tree in the center and a castle at each side. The third panel has a large castle on the right and a tree with barn to the left. The three panels are divided with vertical strips each outlined in darker woods and with an ormolu rosette in the center. Just above the knee of each leg is a flower in marquetry. The legs curve inward and then outward near the floor with rococo ormolu feet. Between the three feet is a circular shelf with brass gallery. This also has a marquetry landscape, with a river, boat, trees and a castle.
