About this object

This baluster vase depicts tree peonies, crab apple, and love-lies-bleeding in rockwork surrounded by a fence framed by lambrequins below and above cloud-collar medallions and blue ruyi. The neck is decorated flowers on blue-and-white scrolls; the cover topped with a lotus bud finial.

The central scene of this covered baluster vase is decorated with famille rose enamels and gilding to depict blooming tree peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa, also know as mudan) in red, rose, blue, and gild; crab apple tree (Malus spectabilis or haitang), and love-lies-bleeding (Amaranthus candatas or xiancai) growing from blue rockwork surrounded by a fence set against a white ground. The scene is framed by a broad band of floral lambrequins at the bottom and a broad band of cloud-collar medallions with chrysanthemum flowers and floating prunus blossoms on a pink cell ground alternating with the same but smaller flowers on a turquoise cracked-ice ground. Above the turquoise ground are lotus flowers on a blue ruyi-shaped ground outlined in yellow. The neck is decorated with alternating peony and lotus flowers, of which the peonies are in reserve, set against a blue ground with white foliate scrolls. The cover is decorated to match the shoulder pattern, edged in gilt, and topped with a gilded lotus (Nelumbo nucifera or hehua) bud finial. The vase stands on gilt wood bases with swags and paw feet, also know as a "Rothschild" stand.
