About this object

The cup with gilt borders and originally gilt in interior. On the front is a rectangle painted with a half length portrait of a woman on a brownish ground. Her toilette is typical of the 1830's with her hair in side curls and a raspberry dress decollete off the shoulders. Her three stranded pearl necklace is clasped to the side and she wears a pearl brooch with three drops at her breast. The rest of the cup is painted with palmettes and scrolls. The sitter is thought to be Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. See notes.
