About this object

This vase is of the bandeau type, with elongated, urn-shaped body and long neck. The porcelain handles, affixed to the shoulders, take the form of scrolling branches and are gilded to imitate gilt bronze. Finely molded and gilded acanthus leaves ornament the base of the vase. On the back, an ornate wreath of leaves encircles a lyre, all rendered in gold on a dark blue ground. The vase is mounted on a gilt bronze plinth. The central part of the body has a large rectangular unidentified landscape. The landscape shows an Italianate scene with a bearded man wearing a red hat and a dog in the foreground, a river in the middle distance, trees on the right, people walking on a road – a group of a woman and boy following a mule, and a man carrying a basket – and a villa amid trees in the distance. Made in several pieces, separate pedestal, foot, handles, etc.
