About this object

Hillwood’s Banquet Service plate was made as a replacement for porcelain made during the reign of Nicholas I. The original service was commissioned for Nicholas’s son Alexander (the future Alexander II) in honor of his forthcoming marriage to Marie, daughter of Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse and the Rhine in 1841. The original Banquet Service was intended for 36 people. The decoration consists of ornamented leaf scrolls in white and gold on a light blue ground. A crowned “A” decorates the center of the plate on a white reserve.

In center on a white ground is the letter A in gold, with the Russian Imperial crown above in gold, red and blue. Around this is a gold border of scrolls in the Second Rococo style. The rim is light blue with scrolls in white and gold.
