About this object

Plain white soup plate with a narrow blue band at rim and on cavetto. The main decoration is the shield of the Gothic, or Alexandria, Cottage at the top of the plate with a sword piercing a wreath of white roses on a blue ground. On the gold band forming the outer edge of the shield is the inscription in Cyrillic: "For Faith, Tsar, and Fatherland." This service, based on the Cottage Service, was designed for use on the Imperial Yacht Alexandria in 1851.

INSCRIPTION [Cyrillic cursive] Za vieru. Tsaria. i Otechestvo. Written in black on gold band around shield. Translation: For Faith, Tsar and Fatherland. mark and date [Cipher of Nicholas II beneath imperial crown] 1898 Stamped in green underglaze on underside near foot. obscured mark [Ground out circle cutting through glaze and porcelain body.] Center, underside of plate. This was probably an Alexander III mark that had to be removed when the whiteware was not painted before the end of his reign. The plate also has a groove cut into the outside of the foot in preparation for gilding, as on most pieces from the reign of Alexander III.
