About this object

The primary decoration is a wide gilt band filled with large pink roses interspersed with classical, vegetal ornament within a geometric band. On the two sides of the monteith are wide ovals painted with realistic landscapes of 1) the overgrown ruins of the Public Baths at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli and 2) the Tomb of Cecilia Metella on the Appian Way. Garland of leaves curves around borders of the monteith's "fingers" and a single classical ornament is painted against the white half circle. The handles are formed from carefully sculpted classical female heads rendered in burnished and matte gold. The foot is a plain oval ringed with gilt lines.
