About this object

From the Cabinet service. The primary decoration is a wide gilt band filled with a profuse, allover pattern of multicolored wildflowers encircling the rim of the monteith. On the two sides of the monteith are wide ovals painted with realistic landscapes of the Pont Molle, a part-Roman, part 15th century bridge spanning the Tiber near Rome and the Castello di Carini near Palermo in Sicily. Garland of leaves curves around borders of the monteith's "fingers" and a single flower is painted against the white half circle. The handles are formed from carefully sculpted classical female heads rendered in burnished and matte gold. The foot is a plain oval ringed with gilt lines.
