About this object
"Histoire naturelle des oiseaux" (1770-1786), by the influential French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, is the source for the birds on this and several other Sèvres services. The scientific names of the birds appear on this service's saucers, revealing the widespread interest in the natural world at the time and efforts to codify it. During the revolutionary years, the factory produced several services decorated with yellow rims and black stylized "Etruscan borders."
This urn-shaped cup has two straight handles that curve softly at the ends. The yellow ground is interrupted by two oval reserves, each painted with a bird in a landscape. A band of black classical motifs decorates the top section of the cup. The names of the birds "Barbu de Cayenne" and "Faisan de la chine" are inscribed on the bottom.
