About this object

This empire-style gilded, reticulated basket with a blue band glazed to imitate lapis lazuli almost gives the appearance of a piece of Greek jewelry. It is from the "Service iconographique grec." The basket reveals the influence of Greek and Roman motifs and forms and how they defined the Empire style in France and Europe.

The basket is round with a spraying rim. The walls are pierced to create a pattern of interlocking reeds resembling a stylized plant form. The base consists of three sections: a braided band in gold, a deep blue band with gold specks and veins imitating lapis lazuli and a foot section with a reed pattern in gold.
