ICE BUCKET FROM A DESSERT SERVICE, ONE OF TWO

Creator(s): Jacob Petit (Maker)

On view in: Dining Room

About this object

A pale pink ground highlighted with gold rococo scrolls and areas of white decorated with polychrome flowers distinguishes this elaborate service. Service pieces are elaborately gilded with contrasting areas of matte and burnished gold and foliate motifs in relief. Dolphins, shells, and acanthus leaf scrolls in relief form the supports and bases of some pieces. The general effect of this ice pail is extremely ornate. The handle of the cover is in the form of two sea horses; the rim of the cover is like a flaring open work crown. There are two handles on the body shaped like round leaf scrolls enclosing male bearded masks. The bulbous body has a round medallion reserved in white enclosing a cluster of flowers and leaves, sorrounded by the pattern of the service-leaf scrolls and lattice in raised gold on pale pink. The feet are shaped like curved sprays of acanthus leaves ending with dolphins, their heads resting on a shaped platform.
