About this object

Neck of decanter is subdivided by four knops. The uppermost is gilded about the top. Neck is channeled in eleven facets. (These facets do match up evenly from knop to knop.) The bottom three knops show residual signs of gilding. Below the lowest knop the body of the decanter bulges outward and is uncut except for a row of thirteen facets ending in arches and fifteen similar cut forms along the base. In each is painted a horizontal stem bearing stylized leaves, all in gilt. The majority of the body of the decanter is decorated with transfer printed images of scattered playing cards in black on a white ground. The transfer printed areas are divided by two unpainted reserves, outlined and decorated in gilt. Their shape is unconventional, but is somewhat reminiscent of Baroque shields. Within these is a scene of a large flower surrounded by smaller buds. Stopper is channeled in a sunburst pattern with gilding on every other facet. Stopper seems too large for the neck of the decanter.
