About this object

The small handled cup is elaborately cut in a pattern divided into three zones. The uppermost consists of a fine diamond pattern made of intersecting lines. Reserves in the shapes of lozenges and circles have been ground into the diamond pattern and alternate about the body. Below this is a band of leaves cut and polished into fluid forms. The final, lowest section is cut into a heavy diamond pattern. The pattern on the front of the cup has been ground and atop this is a shield of blue glass rimmed in gilt decorated with a silvered sword with gilt handle. The sword stands upright and pierces a wreath of white roses interspersed with green leaves. Around the edge of the shield is the motto "For Faith, Tsar, and Fatherland." The base is channeled below the final row of criss-cross engraving. The handle is plain and somewhat roughly cut, except for a series of decorative ridges on the edge. The cup sits on a spreading foot cut in a floral outline with a sunburst cut on the underside. This service was made for the Gothic Cottage at Peterhof.
