Creator(s): St. Petersburg Glassworks (Manufacturer)

On view in: Passageway to Dining Room

About this object

During the reign of Empress Elizabeth I (1741-1761), the St. Petersburg Glassworks operated under state control. As was customary during her reign, Elizabeth’s crowned cipher appears on the manufactory’s objects. Two additional medallions decorate this goblet. The first medallion has an engraved bust of Empress Elizabeth I. The second medallion has what appears to be a double-headed eagle painted in black with the image of St. George and the Dragon in gold on its breast.

Bell-shaped footed beaker in Silesian style is decorated with three medallions: one engraved with the bust of Empress Elizabeth I (Elizaveta Petrovna) within floral leaves, her robe, crown and leaves being gilt. The second is engraved with the interlaced monogram EP for Elizabeth I surmounted by the imperial crown with sprays of leaves to each side, all gilt. The third is engraved with the double headed eagle and three crowns, the eagle being in black, crowns and medallion with St George and the Dragon, the globe and sceptre all being gilt. Between these three medallions are sunbursts and leaves and flowers, all engraved and filled with gilding. Foot is plain. Cover engraved with a band of leaves filled with gilding.
