About this object

Marjorie Merriweather Post commissioned frames from the New York City branch of Cartier with instructions to combine colors complimentary to the particular portrait for which she purchased them. Here, the brown agate suits the brown cloche and fur Post wears, and the striped enamel inner band of the frame reflects the stripes on her dress. Thus, the frame and miniature form a complete work of art.

The agate of the rectangular frame is mottled in light brown and gray. At each corner is a decorative motif which is a diagonal, abstract, pointed, plant form made in citrine quartz, diamonds and white enamel. There is an inner band in gold with a geometric pattern in painted enamel of black and white bars. The back is covered with beige moire silk. Inside, there is a portrait of MMP painted on ivory. She wears a brown hat, fur piece over her right shoulder, a pearl necklace, and a brown and ivory striped dress. She is seated three-quarter length with her right hand on her hip and her left hand in her lap. The background is plain.
