About this object

On the cover of the lapis box is a miniature elephant carved in carnelian. The lid is scalloped in sunburst rays enanating from the center. In the center is an oval piece of stone carved in a sunburst. The elephant stands on top of this, facing forward. The edge is outlined in gilt metal. It stands on four low feet. The sides are cut with s melon design.
