About this object

The painting features Countess Julia Samoilova, Karl Briullov’s famous muse. She is surrounded by a group of Austrian officers in blue, white and black uniforms, two dogs, and a parrot on a stand. She sits in the center of the drawing room of her Milan estate. It is furnished with comfortable chairs and armchairs covered with red velvet as well a Boulle desk supporting a plant in a porcelain cache-pot. These pieces rest on a yellow carpet decorated with a blue-green pattern. In the background, hanging behind the Countess, is a portrait of the hostess painted by Briullov in 1832-34, now one of Hillwood’s most important Russian masterpieces (51.73). It is suspended next to an oval portrait on an easel and a richly ornamented tapestry. The frame is in the neo-baroque style.
