About this object

Ivory damask / moiré corset with pattern of floral garlands and sprigs of leaves. The front busk closes with five metal slide clasps. On the front of the busk is a gold metal hook that looks like an upside down fleur de lies for support. The interior the busk is lined with white cotton backed velvet. The corset is boned with real whale bone. The top of the corset and 2/3 of the length of the busk are adorned with handmade lace with a floral motif and appliqued swirling ribbons. The very top edge, extending beyond the corset is made of two rows of thin ivory ribbon followed by an ½” scalloped lace edge. At the center of the lace on the front of the corset is a flower made of many layers of thin ivory ribbon with a loose trail hanging down the center front. Descending from the busk are silk garters made of 1 ¼” rouched ivory silk ribbon. Stamped metal clasps for adjustment are attached to the ribbon. At the bottom of the ribbon are metal slide clasps marked “Lindsay,” “Pat. May 3, 98,” “August 2, 183(?),” and “Flexible Felt.” The back of the corset laces with a very long silk ribbon that weaves through 16 metal reinforced pairs of grommet hole.
