About this object

Costume inspired by the figure of an elegant peasant woman seated in the background of Makovsky's "Russian Bride's Attire"(Legion of Honor, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco). Artist has recreated the woman's traditional "sarafan," a high-waisted sleveless gown with shoulder straps is worn over a white blouse. The bold gilt painted ornament over the blue and salmon colored dress emulates brocade. The piece is completed with a studded headdress (kokoshnik), earrings and multi-strand pearl necklace, and blue and gilt patterned shoes(2012.11.3). Artwork is supported by a wire armature.
