About this object

In the mid-nineteenth century, the Imperial Porcelain Factory used seemingly ordinary travel books as sources for paintings on dessert plates. Since the factory was extremely prolific during the reign of Nicholas I, its staff constantly sought source materials for decorations and collected examples from foreign factories to study their forms and techniques. Engravings by even little-known artists were, thus, spread throughout Europe and Russia.

A rustic, two-story Alpine cottage dominates the foreground to the left (proper right). Made of a stucco-like material it has a carved wooden balcony protruding toward the street. Two women and a man lead a goat at the side of the house, and another woman in a pink skirt walks toward the front door. There is a barn with hay behind the house and beside it two men, and further on a man tending two white cows. What appears to be a well is to the right. In the middle ground a lake can be seen with a village behind it. Mountains rise up in the distance and behind them are snow-capped peaks. The colors are softly muted.
