About this object

The simple arch-shaped armature of the clock is sheathed with a thin veneer of deep green malachite. Set within the arched body is a circular white clock with an enamel face marked with Roman numerals in black. The clock face is set behind a hinged glass cover decorated with a fine row of gilt bronze beads. Two openings for keys are placed next to the numbers IV and VIII. The clock is surmounted with a low, gilt bronze covered vase decorated with spiral fluting. The lid is topped by a substantial pineapple-shaped finial. Two fine ornamental, arms shaped like scrolling vines attached to the vase's stem just above the knop wrap around the body of the vase. The outer edges of the front of the clock are ornamented in hanging floral swags extending to the base of the clock body and terminating a large scroll. The spreading base of the clock is set on four bun-shaped, gilt bronze feet decorated in a simple reeded pattern. The clockworks are also accessible from a large aperture in the back, also covered by a glass door framed in gilt bronze. The clockworks contain a ringing mechanism, as is also apparent from the back.
